Anthony Salerno

Anthony Salerno (1911 - July 27, 1992) was a mobster and headed the Genovese family during the 1980s. A chubby man, usually seen wearing a Fedora (hat) hat and chomping on a cigar, he was nicknamed Fat Tony Salerno. He was born and raised in East Harlem and progressed through the ranks of the New York mafia through crimes such as loansharking and protection rackets. In 1981, following the death of Frank Tieri, Salerno became the head of the Genovese Family. In 1987 Salerno was convicted on RICO (law) charges in the Mafia Commission Trial. He died in prison from natural causes just five-years into a 100-year prison sentence. He was succeeded in 1987 by Vincent Gigante. It is possible that Fat_Tony#Fat_Tony in ''The Simpsons'' is named after him. Italian-American mobsters
