Barebacking is a term that originated in gay slang for unprotected anal sex. Though it largely retains its original meaning, the term is also used by some heterosexuals to describe unprotected sexual intercourse. Barebacking, a form of unsafe sex which puts both sexual partners at risk for the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases, most notably AIDS, suggests an element of deliberate risk-taking: unprotected anal sex between men in longterm, monogamous relationships is not usually called barebacking (note that the same risks of disease transmission apply to unprotected sex, anal or vaginal, among heterosexuals as well). Barebacking became increasingly common again among MSMs in the mid-1990s. This has been attributed to the introduction of protease inhibitors and other drugs for treating HIV infections, creating the false impression that HIV infection had become a minor problem for those infected, as well as to the phenomenon known as condom fatigue, in which young gay men, tiring of the constant safe-sex messages, began to eschew such practices for various reasons.
