Jpbrenna/The Macedonian QuestionI like Macedonian (nationality). The problem is, this leaves out my third-grade teacher, a couple of chicks I've dated, the former mayor of my city and his brother, the owner of the liquor store up the street; the owner of my favorite pizza parlor and ''his'' brother, the organist at the nearby Roman Catholic church, as well as several renegade "halfbreed" Hellenophone-Slavophone Macedonian-Americans of my acquaintance. None of these people have Macedonian citizenship (nationality), but they trace their roots in whole or in part back to Slavophone inhabitants of Macedonia. So you could say they are "ethnically (Slavic) Macedonian." It gets really tricky Don't even get me started on the religious issues involved: many Slavic Macedonians in my city go to the Greek Orthodox Church because the renegade OCA church that has traditionally served the Slavic Orthodox people around here is "heretical" (or is it just schismatic?) I'm only 2 blocks from the heretical OCA, and about 4 from the heretical Frangokatholiki. I have to drive miles outside the city to get to the unsullied Greek church. No sleeping in on Sundays at all. It makes me just want to walk ''directly'' across the street to the Baptist church. It's small, and there are no icons or candles, and I think they would want to re-baptize me in the river, which is really dirty and has signs saying "E. coli, NO SWIMMING" all along its banks. On the other hand, they seem so nice, and I hear the ladies make a mean peach cobbler too. Anyway, I'm going to go with Macedonian (nationality). Anything else is problematic: their language is Slavic, and Macedonian as an ethnicity is a relatively modern concept. (Although, it should be said, so are most other Balkan ethnicities: until recently, all the Christians in the Balkans called themselves "Romans" and just spoke whatever language they happened to speak and left it at that. It was, like, a big hippie love-fest, man. Groovy! Or so the Turkey would have us believe...)
