JyotirmathJyotirmath, also called ''Jyotir Math'' and ''Joshimath'', is a place in Uttaranchal, India in the Himalayas. It is the site of the original ''uttaramnaya matha'' or northern ''math'' (monastery), established by Adi Sankara. This is one of the four cardinal "Peetham's" established by Sri Adi Sankara, the others being those at Sringeri, Puri and Dwarka As it is close to the pilgrimage town of Badrinath, and the Jyotir Math has not always been active, it is sometimes said that the original northern ''math'' was at Badrinath.
