KPIX



KPIX (CBS 5) is Viacom's CBS-owned and operated television station based in San Francisco, California. Through its Viacom-owned subsidiary, UPN, KPIX is co-owned with KBHK (Channel 44), as well as KOVR (Channel 13) and KMAX (Channel 31) in the neighboring Sacramento, California-Stockton-Modesto market. The station transmits from the Sutro Tower and its signal covers the San Francisco Bay Area. Known on the air as "CBS 5", KPIX is home to one of the higher rated newscasts among CBS-owned stations. ==History== It is Northern California's oldest television station, going on the air on December 24, 1948, and became affilliated with CBS television in April 1949. KPIX was one of the original group of stations belonging to the Westinghouse Electric Corporation's Group W (those other stations included KDKA-TV/KDKA AM Pittsburgh, KYW-TV/KYW (AM) Philadelphia, WBZ-TV/WBZ (AM) Boston, and WJZ-TV Baltimore). ==Programs== KPIX was the station that came up with the concept for a local entertainment and lifestyles program, Evening Magazine. Evening Magazine began on KPIX in August 1976, and within an year, the concept expanded to the other Group W stations. By Fall 1978, the Evening Magazine format was syndicated to other non-Group W markets across the country as PM Magazine. The entire Evening/PM Magazine format was cancelled by the late 1980s.
